How can I say that to you?

Well, a few years ago I was just like you.  Let me explain.

Back in 2007 it became painfully obvious that I had to get a website up and running after hearing “do you have a website?” from potential clients over and over again.

I had no idea what it would cost for a website, or how long it would take to get one up and running.  The fear of making the wrong choice probably cost me a few months of delay as I tried to figure out what to do.

Then one day at a business networking event I met a web guy named George.

He seemed like a reasonable guy.  and after talking with him for more than an hour and getting a 50% discount off his “normal” price, I decided to choose him to set up my first website.

After signing a contract and paying him a deposit, we discussed color choices and the language I wanted on my site.

And soon after our initial discussions that’s when the trouble started.

When two months passed with no more progress than email messages promising that “I’m working on it” or “I’ll get you something to review soon,” it began to dawn on me that I might have made a big mistake.

In a panic I searched for his contract and read over the fine print.

To my dismay I discovered there was no mention of a refund policy.

No mention of a time frame for “project” completion.

In fact, nothing in his contract protected me or guaranteed me anything.  Only his back-side was covered.

With my other marketing efforts on hold waiting for my website, I don’t have to tell you that it was tough going waiting to hear progress reports from him.

Once five (5) months passed by with no website I started getting angry.  I emailed.  I called.  No help.  He stopped apologizing about the delays.  It’s almost like he went into hiding.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Finally one day my good friend Mark called me up and invited me to “mastermind” meeting at his house the following Monday.  It sounded like a good idea, so I decided to attend.

Then he asked about my website.

After listening patiently he said “why don’t you just build your own? I have two websites up and I made them all by myself.”

Funny, but I hadn’t thought of that.

What I Did to Learn How to Create a Website

Still, I didn’t know how long it would take, or how I would learn how to do it myself.  So I went online and started searching around.  I found a mini site creator course and bought it.

4 DVDs and a manual for $497.

Here it is on my home office floor.  I found it on my bookshelf just the other day and decided to dust it off for you to see…

My friends thought I was nuts to “waste time” learning how to code my own website…

But I refused to have my online marketing efforts hi-jacked by someone else anymore.

I stayed up until 2:00 am most nights working my way through the lessons (my wife wasn’t too happy about that).  And after more than a month of working through all the DVDs I finally knew enough to set up my own site.

He called me a couple of weeks after my own website was up and running to let me know that the site he was “working on” for me would be ready in a couple of weeks.  For real.  Mind you, this was seven months after paying him.

I can’t describe to you the joy of telling him that I didn’t need his website anymore.  After a few moments of stunned silence he told me that I owed him some more money, since he had spent so much time on my website.

That’s right. After paying him $800 bucks for basically NOTHING he wanted me to pay him the remaining $200 for a website he failed to deliver on time.
